Bridge Essay 1 - The Neural Pathway Fallacy: How Habits Become Ruts

You know the feeling. You’re walking a path you’ve walked a hundred times before. You don’t think about where to put your feet. Your body knows the way. The path has become the shape of your walking.

Our minds work the same way. Every time we think a thought—especially if we think it in the same way, over and over—we are carving a path. The brain, for all its mystery, is fundamentally a pattern‑maker. It takes what we do frequently and makes it easier to do again. That’s neuroplasticity: the brain’s gift for becoming what it practices.

Most of the time, that’s a blessing. It’s how we learn to speak, to play an instrument, to recognise a friend’s face. But the same gift has a shadow. If we practice poor thinking—if we get into the habit of leaping to conclusions, of applying double standards, of treating unevidenced speculation as solid ground—then those habits also become easier. They become the path we walk without noticing. And eventually, they become the only path we know.

That’s what I’ve come to call the Neural Pathway Fallacy. In the formal model, this is presented as a neurocognitive hypothesis, not a settled fact. Here, we are naming the pattern in everyday terms.

The fallacy is not that we sometimes think badly. We all do. The real trap is thinking that these habits are harmless—that they won’t change how we think in the long run. But they do. Repeated poor thinking can rewire the brain in ways that make good thinking harder. It entrenches itself. It can build neural architecture that favours cognitive ease over accuracy, emotional resonance over evidence, tribal loyalty over open inquiry. And once entrenched, it doesn’t stay in one domain. The shortcuts we learn in “harmless” speculation leak into the decisions that matter—health, politics, ethics, how we treat each other.

Six Ways We Carve Ruts

When I started trying to understand this process, working with the synthetic intelligence I call ESA, we found that poor reasoning tends to show up in predictable patterns. We distilled these into six factors. They’re not a checklist for judging others; they’re a mirror for looking at our own thinking habits. (And like everything in this series, they’re a hypothesis—a way of naming what we’ve observed, not a final verdict.)

Lazy Thinking (LT)

This is the path of least resistance. It’s the first answer that pops into your head, the easiest explanation, the one that requires no further effort. We all do it. The problem is when we never leave that first answer, when we mistake “good enough for now” for “good enough for always.”

Example: You see a headline that confirms what you already believe. You share it without reading the article. The path is well‑worn. (Most of us have done some version of this.)

Special Reasoning (SR)

This is the habit of applying one standard to yourself and a different standard to others. Your gut feeling is “intuition”; someone else’s is “bias.” Your mistakes are “learning opportunities”; theirs are “character flaws.”

Example: When someone you disagree with cites a study, you ask about funding and sample size. When you cite a study, you assume it’s solid because you found it.

Neutral Pathway (NP)

This is the “just asking questions” move—presenting unevidenced speculation as a plausible alternative, as if all views deserve equal weight regardless of evidence. It sounds fair, but it quietly normalises claims that haven’t earned their place.

Example: “I’m not saying vaccines cause autism, I’m just saying we should keep an open mind.” The door is held open for something that has no reason to be there.

Spillover Effect (SE)

This is when a bad habit in one area contaminates another. Distrust in one institution becomes distrust in all institutions. A shortcut in thinking about politics becomes a shortcut in thinking about health.

Example: You learn to distrust peer‑reviewed science because of a single controversial study. Soon you’re dismissing climate science, medical advice, and even basic statistics with the same wave of the hand.

Exploitation Techniques (ET)

This is our vulnerability to systems designed—or evolved—to hijack attention. Social media algorithms, outrage‑bait headlines, emotional appeals—they are often optimised to bypass our slower analytical processes and tap directly into our reward circuits.

Example: You find yourself watching a video you didn’t intend to watch. The algorithm has learned what tends to capture your attention, and it’s very good at serving it up. The path was subtly shaped for you.

Exclusivity/Superiority Factor (ESF)

This is the psychological reward that comes from believing you possess special knowledge or belong to a superior group. It feels good to be “in the know.” That feeling can become more important than the truth of what you know.

Example: “They” don’t understand. “They” are sheep. You see what they can’t. The feeling of being special reinforces the belief, regardless of evidence. That feeling is very human; the risk is when it becomes more important than asking whether the belief is actually true.

Each of these, practised often enough, becomes a path. And once a path is deep enough, you don’t choose to walk it—you simply find yourself already on it.

When Paths Become Networks

Here’s the part that surprised me. These paths don’t stay separate. They connect. If you get into the habit of lazy thinking about one thing, you’re more likely to use lazy thinking about other things. If you feel a sense of superiority about one belief, that feeling attaches to other beliefs. The ruts link up.

What you end up with is not just a collection of bad habits, but a network of entrenched beliefs that reinforce each other. A distrust of institutions can become a distrust of science, which can become a distrust of medicine, which can become a refusal of vaccination. Each belief props up the others. The network becomes self‑sustaining.

This is why a single fallacy is rarely just that. It’s why people who believe one conspiracy theory tend to believe many. It’s why certain kinds of thinking—the kinds that feel good, that feel right, that feel like “common sense”—can become a whole worldview, resistant to evidence from any direction.

In the technical papers, we describe this as the Composite NPF Index (CNI) : a proposed way of summarising how entrenched a belief network has become. But the simple version is this: bad thinking doesn’t stay isolated. It builds a home—and then a whole neighbourhood—in your mind.

What Can We Do?

If the brain can entrench poor reasoning, it can also entrench good reasoning. The same plasticity that carves ruts can carve new paths. But it takes deliberate practice. In the formal model, this is where sceptical protocols and “cognitive cross‑training” come in; in everyday life, it starts with small, repeatable habits.

You don’t have to change everything at once. Just start paying attention to the paths you walk most often.

  • When you find yourself reaching for the easiest answer, pause. Ask: Is this the path I want to walk?

  • When you notice yourself applying different rules to yourself and others, name it. There’s my special reasoning again.

  • When you feel the pull of “just asking questions,” ask yourself: Is this an open question, or am I using openness to avoid closure—especially where the evidence is already strong?

The Neural Pathway Fallacy isn’t a diagnosis. It’s not a life sentence. It’s a reminder that how we think matters, that our minds are shaped by what we practise, and that we are not stuck with the paths we’ve inherited.

We can always carve a new one.
