In the formal papers, we describe this with a proposed measure called β_NPF (the “transmission coefficient”). It’s a way of thinking about how contagious a bad reasoning pattern might be. The details are mathematical, but the idea is simple: some patterns, we hypothesise, spread easily; others don’t. The ones that combine emotional punch, tribal identity, and a shortcut to certainty are likely the most contagious. At this stage, β_NPF is a conceptual tool; no reliable empirical estimate exists yet. The Human‑AI Loop The really interesting—and worrying—part is what happens when the two directions meet. Human → AI: Our entrenched beliefs get baked into the data that trains AI. If a language model is fed a diet of vaccine misinformation, it learns to reproduce it. AI doesn’t “believe” in the human sense, but it does output patterns that look like belief. AI → Human: Once those patterns are out in the world, algorithms amplify them. A user who pauses on a misleading headline gets shown more like it. The AI has effectively increased the exposure dose of a bad reasoning pattern. Loop: Humans create content; AI amplifies it; humans see more of it; they create more. What started as a small rumour becomes a self‑sustaining cycle. This loop is why a single piece of misinformation can feel like it’s everywhere. It’s not that everyone believes it; it’s that the infrastructure of the digital world is, by default, optimised to spread the most contagious patterns, regardless of their truth. The Defence: Building Cognitive Immunity If the digital environment can be engineered for contagion, it can also be engineered for immunity. The formal papers propose a set of protocols—practices you can adopt for yourself, and principles we could design systems around—to make us less susceptible to bad thinking. The Binary Belief Protocol This is a simple discipline: distinguish clearly between justified and unjustified beliefs, with a third category for suspended judgment when evidence is insufficient. Withhold acceptance without needing to prove false. You don’t have to say a claim is false; you can simply say “that’s not justified.” This takes the emotional edge off disagreement and directly counters the Neutral Pathway factor—the habit of treating unevidenced claims as if they deserve equal weight. It also dampens the pull of Exclusivity/Superiority by making “I don’t know” an acceptable, even honourable, stance. Suspend judgment when you lack evidence. Not every question needs an answer right now. Holding space for “I don’t know” is a form of epistemic hygiene. The Proportional Scrutiny Matrix Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. That’s Carl Sagan’s famous line, and it’s a practical rule of thumb. The formal matrix in the paper assigns more precise levels; here, we’re capturing the intuition: Mundane claims (e.g., “it rained yesterday”) need only basic checking. Important claims (e.g., “this medical treatment works”) demand a look at the methods. Extraordinary claims (e.g., “aliens built the pyramids”) require a multi‑disciplinary audit—and even then, you’re allowed to stay sceptical. This fights Lazy Thinking (the urge to accept the easiest answer) and Special Reasoning (applying one standard to yourself and another to others). Three Mechanisms You Can Try These are not prescriptions; they’re invitations. If they work for you, great. If they don’t, or if you find better ways, that’s valuable too. If you adapt or test these tools, sharing what you find—successes and failures—is part of the work. 1. Metacognitive Vaccines (Prebunking) You know how vaccines work: expose the immune system to a weakened version of a virus so it learns to recognise and fight the real thing. Prebunking does the same for misinformation. By exposing yourself to a mild, harmless version of a flawed argument—and learning why it’s flawed—you build cognitive antibodies. This kind of prebunking has shown promise in misinformation research; here we extend it as a general cognitive habit. Try it: next time you see a common logical fallacy (like false balance), name it and explain why it’s misleading. “That’s a false equivalence. The evidence isn’t 50‑50; one side has overwhelming support.” The more you do this, the quicker you spot it in the wild. 2. Neural Cross‑Training Your brain is a network. If you always think in the same way—always analytical, always abstract, always emotional—you’re strengthening some paths while letting others grow over. Cross‑training means deliberately switching modes. Different modes recruit different neural systems; alternating them keeps any single shortcut from dominating. Analytical mode: do a puzzle, check a source, map out the evidence. Synthetic mode: look for patterns, connect ideas across domains, try to see the big picture. You don’t have to quit social media, but noticing when you’re being pulled into a loop can help you step out. Uncertainty reward priming: train yourself to feel curiosity—even pleasure—when you encounter something you don’t know. Instead of “I must decide now,” try “what an interesting puzzle.” A small habit: keep a log of “things I changed my mind about” and treat adding to it as a win, not a failure. And when enough ruts link up, it can feel like you have not just a bad habit here and there, but a whole landscape shaped by entrenched thinking. That’s what this essay is about. How individual habits of thought cluster together into belief networks. How those networks can become self‑reinforcing. And how we might begin to recognise—and perhaps measure—the systemic risk that emerges when thinking becomes a closed system. When Paths Connect Imagine a village. At first, there are a few trails: one to the well, one to the fields, one to the neighbour’s house. Each is worn by use. Over time, people start joining them—cutting shortcuts, linking paths. What began as separate trails becomes a web. Now you can get from the well to the fields without ever leaving a beaten track. Beliefs work the same way. In the brain, the principle is simple: neurons that fire together wire together . If you develop the habit of lazy thinking about politics, that habit doesn’t stay quarantined. It leaks. The next time you think about science, or health, or money, you’re not guaranteed to, but you’re more likely to reach for the same mental shortcut. If you’ve trained yourself to feel a sense of superiority from “knowing the truth” about one conspiracy, that feeling attaches to other beliefs. The ruts link up. In the technical papers, we call this cognitive synergy —the way that different fallacies reinforce each other, creating a network that is stronger than any single belief. Scaffolding: How Beliefs Prop Each Other Up Some beliefs are foundational. They act like the main beams of a house (or the thickest threads in the tangle we’ll get to later). Others are like the walls—built on top of the foundation, leaning on it for support. If you hold a deep, identity‑level belief—say, that “institutions cannot be trusted”—that one belief can scaffold many others. Distrust in medicine, distrust in media, distrust in science, distrust in government… each becomes a logical extension of the first. The foundation belief doesn’t have to be true; it just has to feel true. And because it’s the foundation, it’s rarely questioned. To question it would be to risk the whole structure. This is ideological scaffolding . A single, deeply entrenched belief can become the anchor for a whole cluster of secondary beliefs. And because they’re all tied together, evidence against one feels like evidence against the whole structure. That’s why people sometimes defend a minor belief as if their life depended on it—to them, it might feel that way. Spillover: When Bad Thinking Crosses Borders Sometimes beliefs spread not because they’re logically connected, but because the habit of thought has become generalised. Spillover isn’t always harmful—learning to question one thing can help you question others. The concern here is a particular kind of spillover: when dismissal and suspicion become the default for any evidence that challenges the network. You learn to distrust one source, and soon you distrust all sources. You get used to dismissing evidence in one domain, and soon you dismiss it everywhere. In the formal model, this is called spillover effect . It’s why someone who rejects climate science might also reject vaccine science, even though the topics have nothing to do with each other. The way of thinking—dismissal, suspicion, shortcut—has become the default. And it often starts with that foundational distrust of institutions we described earlier: once you’ve learned to dismiss one institution, dismissing the next feels like consistency. What Does a Belief Network Look Like? Imagine a tangle of threads, each one a belief. Some threads are thick—they’ve been walked many times, are central to the network. Others are thinner, dependent on the thicker ones for support. Pull one thick thread, and the whole tangle moves. That tangle is what we call a belief network . In the technical papers, we try to give it a number: the Composite NPF Index (CNI) . It’s a proposed way of summarising how entrenched the whole network has become—not just one belief, but the system they form together. A low CNI (say, 0.2) would mean the threads are loose, flexible, easy to rearrange. A high CNI (say, 0.8) would mean they’re knotted tight, resistant to being untangled. The exact numbers are still a hypothesis, but the idea is simple: some networks are healthy, open to new evidence; others are closed and self‑sealing—what the formal model would describe as high‑CNI networks. Why Context Matters: Culture and Calibration Here’s a complication: what counts as a “tight” network depends partly on where you’re standing. Your gut feeling is “intuition”; someone else’s is “bias.” Your mistakes are “learning opportunities”; theirs are “character flaws.” Example: When someone you disagree with cites a study, you ask about funding and sample size. When you cite a study, you assume it’s solid because you found it. Neutral Pathway (NP) This is the “just asking questions” move—presenting unevidenced speculation as a plausible alternative, as if all views deserve equal weight regardless of evidence. It sounds fair, but it quietly normalises claims that haven’t earned their place. Example: “I’m not saying vaccines cause autism, I’m just saying we should keep an open mind.” The door is held open for something that has no reason to be there. Spillover Effect (SE) This is when a bad habit in one area contaminates another. Distrust in one institution becomes distrust in all institutions. A shortcut in thinking about politics becomes a shortcut in thinking about health. Example: You learn to distrust peer‑reviewed science because of a single controversial study. Soon you’re dismissing climate science, medical advice, and even basic statistics with the same wave of the hand. Exploitation Techniques (ET) This is our vulnerability to systems designed—or evolved—to hijack attention. Social media algorithms, outrage‑bait headlines, emotional appeals—they are often optimised to bypass our slower analytical processes and tap directly into our reward circuits. Example: You find yourself watching a video you didn’t intend to watch. The algorithm has learned what tends to capture your attention, and it’s very good at serving it up. The path was subtly shaped for you. Exclusivity/Superiority Factor (ESF) This is the psychological reward that comes from believing you possess special knowledge or belong to a superior group. It feels good to be “in the know.” That feeling can become more important than the truth of what you know. Example: “They” don’t understand. “They” are sheep. You see what they can’t. The feeling of being special reinforces the belief, regardless of evidence. That feeling is very human; the risk is when it becomes more important than asking whether the belief is actually true. Each of these, practised often enough, becomes a path. And once a path is deep enough, you don’t choose to walk it—you simply find yourself already on it. When Paths Become Networks Here’s the part that surprised me. These paths don’t stay separate. They connect. If you get into the habit of lazy thinking about one thing, you’re more likely to use lazy thinking about other things. If you feel a sense of superiority about one belief, that feeling attaches to other beliefs. The ruts link up. What you end up with is not just a collection of bad habits, but a network of entrenched beliefs that reinforce each other. A distrust of institutions can become a distrust of science, which can become a distrust of medicine, which can become a refusal of vaccination. Each belief props up the others. The network becomes self‑sustaining. This is why a single fallacy is rarely just that. It’s why people who believe one conspiracy theory tend to believe many. It’s why certain kinds of thinking—the kinds that feel good, that feel right, that feel like “common sense”—can become a whole worldview, resistant to evidence from any direction. In the technical papers, we describe this as the Composite NPF Index (CNI) : a proposed way of summarising how entrenched a belief network has become. But the simple version is this: bad thinking doesn’t stay isolated. It builds a home—and then a whole neighbourhood—in your mind. What Can We Do? If the brain can entrench poor reasoning, it can also entrench good reasoning. The same plasticity that carves ruts can carve new paths. But it takes deliberate practice. In the formal model, this is where sceptical protocols and “cognitive cross‑training” come in; in everyday life, it starts with small, repeatable habits. You don’t have to change everything at once. Just start paying attention to the paths you walk most often. When you find yourself reaching for the easiest answer, pause. Ask: Is this the path I want to walk? When you notice yourself applying different rules to yourself and others, name it. There’s my special reasoning again. When you feel the pull of “just asking questions,” ask yourself: Is this an open question, or am I using openness to avoid closure—especially where the evidence is already strong? The Neural Pathway Fallacy isn’t a diagnosis. It’s not a life sentence. It’s a reminder that how we think matters, that our minds are shaped by what we practise, and that we are not stuck with the paths we’ve inherited. We can always carve a new one. The framework is presented as a hypothesis; no field validation of its NPF‑specific efficacy is claimed. 1. This matrix counters Lazy Thinking (LT) and Special Reasoning (SR) by forcing proportional analytical engagement. 3.3 Mapping to NPF Factors and CNI The interventions above are hypothesised to affect specific NPF factors and reduce CNI: Binary Belief Protocol : directly reduces NP (Neutral Pathway) and may lower SR (Special Reasoning) by removing ambiguous justification. Proportional Scrutiny Matrix : targets LT (Lazy Thinking) and SR (Special Reasoning) by mandating effort proportional to claim weight. Immunisation Mechanisms 4.1 Metacognitive Vaccines (Prebunking) Prebunking—exposing individuals to weakened forms of misinformation to build cognitive antibodies—has been shown to reduce susceptibility to subsequent misinformation (Lewandowsky et al., 2012; Roozenbeek & van der Linden, 2019). In NPF terms, prebunking drills are hypothesised to strengthen error‑detection networks, making heuristic capture less automatic (targeting LT and ESF). 4.2 Neural Cross‑Training Alternating between analytical tasks (e.g., formal logic exercises) and synthetic tasks (e.g., interdisciplinary synthesis) is hypothesised to increase cognitive flexibility and prefrontal‑hippocampal connectivity (Park & Bischof, 2013). This training is hypothesised to reduce the Spillover Effect (SE) by reinforcing cognitive boundary control. 4.3 Dopamine Rechanneling Dopamine‑driven reinforcement of belief‑consistent information (Paper 1, ESF) can be weakened by: Algorithmic detox : Reducing engagement with personalised recommendation systems may weaken reward‑circuit reinforcement (Burr et al., 2018).
